The Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) isn’t the only one preparing for war in the official trailer for the penultimate season of Game of Thrones. “I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms. And I will.”
Fans may have been left with a longer wait between seasons than in previous years, but our first proper glimpse—walking around alone and grim-faced hardly counts—suggests the wait will have been well worth it. Even with a reduced run of seven episodes, the upcoming season promises the usual Westerosi mix of blood, battle and badassery. Let your fan-juices flow freely!
“Enemies to the East. Enemies to the West. Enemies to the South. Enemies to the North. Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it,” Cersei (Lena Headey) says to her brother-lover Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). “We are the last Lannisters. The last ones who count.”
Ouch, poor Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). But he isn’t the only one with family issues, as Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) whispers poisonously into Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) ear as only Littlefinger can, “Your father and brothers are gone, yet here you stand. Last best hope against the coming storm.”
And the storm is what comes, with plenty of flashes of battles to follow, which even for a show like Game of Thrones look to be on an epic scale. After all, it’s left to Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) to declare, “The Great War is here.”
If you’re a HBO viewer, July 16th is the date you want to circle in red on your calendar. But if you happen to live across the Narrow Sea, then the series will premier in the UK on July 17th on Sky Atlantic. Either way, make note: Returning to Westeros, eeek!!!
